Alan is a respected elder, song-man and teacher of dance in the east Kimberley region of Australia. He is a multi skilled artist working in a range of mediums including ochre painting, printmaking, woodcarving and boab engraving as well as producing the beautiful string cross totems used in dance performance. Alan was born at Victoria River Station, Northern Territory in 1933. Remaining on Victoria Station until 1957, Alan’s broad station experience has included living and working as head stockman on Beswick Station, Katherine’ Elsey Station near Mataranka in the Territory, Maninbelli Station, Elizabeth Downs, Delamere and Willaroo. Moving onto Wyndham, Western Australia, Alan worked as a plumber before settling on Newry Station, again as a stockman as well as a cook. Then in 1965 he settled in Kununurra, living at Ivanhoe Station operating a tractor on a cotton farm. In 1963 Alan married his ‘promised bride’, Peggy Griffiths and has five children and many grandchildren.
